De botanische naam van de kievitsbloem, Fritillaria, is afkomstig van fritillus, latijn voor dobbelbeker. De Romeinse dobbelbeker had kleine ruitvormige openingen die deden denken aan de vierkante patronen op de bloemblaadjes.
